A new way to look at your bathroom

Laser texturing doesn’t mean inevitably small measures. Sure, in the main part of our work we talk about tenths or hundredths of a millimeter but in some case it’s interesting to think a little bigger. In addition to this we are used to link the laser engraving technique with steel and aluminum molds. With just a single processing you can have tons of copies of the same product. When these two main points of our work are not required it means that you have to develop a new way to design and industrialize.

This is what is happening in our last project: the customization of marble, granite, onyx, stone and quartz tiles. The first differences between our daily work and this case it’s the dimension of the texture. We are no longer talking about objects that can be touched by the user, but about large surfaces like floors and walls . Usually we watch them at least from fifty centimeters away, and for this reason the decorative motif must be bigger than ever to be perceived and understood.

This doesn’t mean that also the deep of the texture have to be increased in proportion. During our test we have tried to obtain something very strong and aggressive, but the result was wrong for three reasons. First, to engrave even one millimeter of rock requires a huge amount of time . Especially if you work in square meters and not more inches as we usually do.

This is unsustainable on an economical level, it as would cover the bathroom with gold bullion Secondly, a depth of the finishing too accentuated would be very uncomfortable to walk on barefoot – like many of us are used to do – and it would favor the accumulation of dirt. I would never put anyone in a position to clean hundreds of inlaid by hand . And , finally , you would have a very expensive  floor – so dirty and annoying as valuable – for nothing. Because the texture would be almost completely invisible except in determinate light conditions . A bathroom isn’t something you can turn over in your hands and feel the texture without looking directly at it. You have to see the decoration on the wall. If you want you can touch it, but It would seem a little strange after the first two or three times. So we decide to work with laminate marble. This kind of finishing makes the rock completely smooth , shiny and slightly darker than the rough version. If you scratch the surface with enough force to peel off the top layer – with a minimum output compared to the engravings of which we spoke earlier – you will see the natural rock resurface, making the final result awesome. You have a very bright and refined surface inlaid with dull and rough patterns. It’s marvelous under every point of view, from the simple look to the more conceptual side. In these days we are trying different techniques on different tiles, with the aim to achieve the same results in each case. If everything goes as we think it will be possible to have a new way to make it even more personal our home sooner than you can imagine.
